I have just retired from 25 years of teaching and usually the summer is stressful even though I am off. This summer is different. I am not feeling stressed because I know I don’t have to go back and be in stress for 10 months with no time to get refreshed.
I have been going to the beach every morning that I can and it has made all the difference getting to be outside under God’s sky and feeling the peace of the water.
Yesterday, at worship our pastor brought out an interesting point. He used the story of Mary and Martha found in the gospel of Luke where Martha is troubled about many things but Mary had chosen the best thing.
The point I found so interesting was this:
Stress is what happens when our soul can’t catch up with our body.
Our soul needs time to be calm and quiet and to be refreshed. When it can’t keep up with our bodily demands we feel stress.
As Psalm 23 states, “He leads me beside the still water”. He will lead us, but will we follow? If we don’t follow and our body out runs our soul we will be the one to suffer. As Brother Jim said: Let your soul catch up with your body. Be still.
